Across six decades, Amitabh Sengupta has moved between painting, printmaking, video and digital graphics, drawing on a life lived between India, France and Nigeria.
Born in Calcutta in 1941, Sengupta graduated in painting from the Government College of Arts and Crafts in 1963. A French Government scholarship took him to Paris for painting and printmaking at the École des Beaux-Arts.
After further study at the State University of New York at Buffalo, he worked in Nigeria, where he led visual-arts departments at two universities. His practice has continued to cross media and geographies, bringing abstraction, figuration and lived experience into conversation.
The Saraswati Foundation collection includes a painting by Amitabh Sengupta. It offers a close view of the artist’s continued exploration across abstraction and figuration.
